MARINA BUKVIC
LA MODELO DEL MES
Marina is one of the most pleasant and professional models we know. She’s been working since she was a 15 year old but yet never seems jaded. She walks into every casting with a smile. A little African girl I know was doing her first job on a commercial – one of those jobs were everyone is running around and barking orders and which can make an actor feel totally lost and under-appreciated. Her mum called me afterwards to say that there had been one model who had taken the time to explain how it all worked and had made this little 8 year girl feel special by having lunch with her. Immediately I realized that she was talking about Marina.
How long have you been working as a model/actress?
For 16 years.
What is your career highlight?
Now I can enjoy my job much more than when I was very young. I choose what I want to do and I do have some control over my career. I have found balance and some stability in my life, it is posible while doing this crazy job, as before I was traveling all the time living between New York, Paris, Belgrade (my home town) and I was not very healthy and happy. And yes, it was often great fun shooting on amazing locations, meeting some real interesting people, but the answer is now is the highlight of my career, it's all rolling at a pace I can enjoy myself.
How important is your relationship with your agent?
Very important, good communication is everything. For me it's based on trust and respect. My agent and I are always deciding together on what we should and should not do and so on, she is a very experienced agent and a great warm people person, we really get along and is very important for me.
How do you prepare for the casting?
I do some breathing to calm myself down and I picture myself in the casting doing great job.
I try to have fun with it, while waiting or being in the casting room. It is better if you enjoy it!
What advice would you give to a model at the beginning of her career?
Don't start before you are, at least, 18 years old. There is time, I'm 32 years old and am still working, so it’s better to finish school and then start, there is no rush. When you are more mature in your life you will make smarter decisions about your career.
Be healthy and have your own mind!
Dance is great to keep fit! And have other interests, this job should not be the only thing you do. Fill your life with love and great people.
The only control that you have over your career is saying no, so say no to a job or casting you don't want to do or to being where you don't want to live. If you see that certain things don't make you happy, say no. I remember girls hated living in Paris and doing all those castings there, but they did it anyway and these things leave consequences in your personal life.
Be kind and good to yourself, there is soooo much rejection in this job, it's just one part of it, that it's why is important to trust yourself and believe that the jobs that are for you will come your way and all the rejection was just the way to get to those great ones.
